Dominio Eguren

Castilla

The Eguren family has grown and vinified wine in Castilla - specifically in Rioja - since the 1870s. Their properties include Sierra Cantabria in Rioja and Numanthia in the Toro region.

Codice is 100% Tempranillo grown on Finca La Mota, a 25 hectare (61 acre) southwest-facing vineyard at 2700 feet above sea level. The soils here are composed of chalk and clay. The vines are planted in the traditional vaso (bush) and cabeza (head-trained) systems.

Fermentation is temperature-controlled and the wine ages for 6 months in barriques of French and American oak.

2006 Codice earned 89 points from Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellars:

Bright ruby. Smoky cherry and black raspberry on the nose. Clean and brisk, with fresh red and dark berry flavors, no obvious tannins and good back-end minerality. Extremely easy to drink, offering impressive depth and purity of fruit for the money, as usual for this bottling.”
