The Moro
family has been making wine for more than 120 years in Ribera del
Duero. Bodegas Emilio Moro is a family-owned estate which encompasses
70 hectares of vineyards in several parcels within Pesquera de Duero
located on the banks of the Duero River.
The Emilio
Moro vineyards have the advantage of including the indigenous Tinta
del Pais, a local Tempranillo cultivar. Another advantage is the location
and variety of soil types. Pesquera is well known for its wine growing
tradition. The diversity of soils, together with the varying exposure
of the vines to sunshine, gives each estate's wine its individual
character.
The vineyards
that are used for Emilio Moro's 2004 are 18-33 years old and are planted
100% to Tinta del Pais. The soils are clay with gravel and chalk.
The vines are oriented to the south and the yields are 1.67-2.09 t/acre.
The grapes were macerated for 28 days with remontage. The wine was
aged in 50% French Allier, and 50% American oak for 12 months.
Production:
1000 cases for the U.S.
The 2004
Emilio Moro Ribera del Duero earned 92points in The Wine Advocate:
“The
reasonably priced 2004 Emilio Moro is a terrific Ribera del Duero
aged in equal parts French and American oak prior to bottling. Its
dense ruby/purple color is followed by a projected nose of blackberries,
currants, cherries, smoky oak, and crushed rocks. Terrific texture,
super purity, an opulent, full-bodied palate, and a long, heady finish
suggest it will keep for 7-8 years.”
