Guy Breton

Morgon

Guy Breton’s Vieilles Vignes comes from 80 year old vines on a 3 hectare domain in the climats of Saint-Joseph and Grand Cras. In 1986 Breton took over from his grandfather who had always sold the estate's production to a negotiant. The vines are tended manually, without chemicals, harvest is by hand too, and fermentation takes place naturally after carbonic maceration for a minimum of 15 days in barrels. There it remains to clarify (such as it is) without fining or filtering for six to eight months.

2007:

Pale and bright magenta colors. The nose is all sweet red berries with thick, pristine skins broken open with cornflower joints, pepper and black tea. Now (9/08) it appears as a relatively dry, lightweight vintage, but we can expect it to gain the impression of fat and weight over the coming months and years. Nevertheless, even now this has all the ballast of Morgon -- a silky, substantial movement of texture and the surprising ability to right itself regardless of interference. The tannins are noble, cocoa and walnut flavored. The finish is glossy and mineral, with representations of tartness, black ripe seeds and spiced orange peels.
